What conditions do chiropractors treat?

  • Doctors of Chiropractic (DCs) care for clients of all ages, with a variety of health conditions. DCs are especially well known for their expertise in caring for clients with back pain, neck pain and headaches...particularly with their highly skilled manipulations or chiropractic adjustments and use of adjunctive physical therapeutic modalities and techniques. They also care for clients with a wide range of injuries and disorders of the neuromusculoskeletal system, involving the muscles, ligaments, nerves  and joints. These painful conditions often involve or impact the neuromusculoskeletal system, which can cause referred pain and dysfunction distant to the region of injury. DCs also counsel clients on diet, nutrition, exercise, healthy habits, and occupational and lifestyle modification.

Is chiropractic treatment safe?

  • Chiropractic is widely recognized as one of the safest drug-free, non-invasive therapies available for the treatment of neuromusculoskeletal complaints. Although chiropractic has an excellent safety record, no health treatment is completely free of potential adverse effects. The risks associated with chiropractic, however, are very small and rare. Many clients feel immediate relief following chiropractic treatment, but some may experience mild soreness, stiffness or aching, just as they do after some forms of exercise. Current research shows that minor discomfort or soreness following spinal manipulation typically fades within 24 hours. Regulatory bodies in Ontario require that all health professions provide clients with sufficiently complete information about their condition and treatment options sufficient to be able to provide informed consent to proceed with both assessment and care even if that care means being referred to another health professional.

Once I start care, how often and for how long do I need to keep going?

  • A return to function is different for every patient and depends on such factors as whether the condition is acute or chronic, mild or severe. Each client receives an individualized report of findings that will detail recommended treatment. Clients are the custodian of their own care and it is up to each client to ultimately decide what is best for them. Dr. Stants believes that clients should be informed partners in deciding what therapeutic interventions will best expedite their timely return to optimal function.
